This is probably the #1 question from anyone new to the journey: “How long until my locs actually lock?” The honest answer — it depends on your hair texture, but most people see real locking (the hair tangling into itself and holding shape) somewhere between 3 to 6 months, with full maturity taking a year or more.
Coarser, kinkier hair textures often lock faster than finer or looser textures. That’s not better or worse — just different timelines for different hair.
The biggest thing that slows locking down? Impatience — re-doing starter locs too often because they “don’t look right yet.” Trust the process and keep your hands out of it more than you think you should.
